A Home Around a Pool
Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan
Interior Renovation, Built
30,000 Sq. Ft.
This home is for a ceramist and a painter. The couple wished to have spaces in which they could each create their art in a specific and solitary way. As a design strategy, the home is divided into a studio and living unit. A screened courtyard in the middle allows for ample light and cross ventilation. It serves as an interstitial space that separates but also connects the two sections of the home.

The Mozambican context is characterized by imaginative thinking, the ability to create with little, and to enjoy beauty and colour in craft and play - irrespective of one’s means and limitations. The sensibility for this project is inspired by this resilience. The primitive forms of the Macuti home are fused with the image of children studying and playing under an acacia tree. Such imagery has informed the masterplan and landscape design of the project. The project is imagined as an ensemble of volumes that hug an inner garden that comprises of places for play and gathering.
