A Home Around a Pool
Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan
Interior Renovation, Built
30,000 Sq. Ft.
This home is for a ceramist and a painter. The couple wished to have spaces in which they could each create their art in a specific and solitary way. As a design strategy, the home is divided into a studio and living unit. A screened courtyard in the middle allows for ample light and cross ventilation. It serves as an interstitial space that separates but also connects the two sections of the home.
The Bottle Project
There is a continuous rise in the production of plastic waste around the world - these then end up in oceans or landfills. After being dumped, plastic bottles take 500 years to begin to decompose.
Re-using plastic bottles is the beginning of an effort to reduce our carbon footprint, and to find sustainable ways of building in cities.
We began to experiment with waste plastic bottles and wood shavings. We began to learn about ways in which filled bottles may be used to create wall elements and structural support. Our first experiement resulted in a small stool with a terrazo top. Subequently, we bega to experiment with a series of wall modules that would help create a screen.
